Biography
He showed courage on cavalry scouts in the Arizona frontier.
Patrick J. Burke was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1835 and entered the United States Army at Vallejo, California. He served as a farrier with Company B, 8th United States Cavalry, during the Indian Wars.
Between 13 August and 31 October 1868, Burke took part in scouting and combat near the Black Mountains in Arizona Territory. His bravery during these operations earned the Medal of Honor, issued on 24 July 1869. The award recognized his conduct across the campaign rather than describing a single rescue or charge.
