Lieutenant, Indian Army
Lieutenant Philip Salkeld VC was an English officer of the Indian Army who became the first person to be awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. He received this prestigious award for his actions during the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
Salkeld's heroic deed occurred during the assault on the Kashmir Gate in Delhi. Despite being mortally wounded during the operation to blow up the gate, his conspicuous gallantry in completing the hazardous task under heavy enemy fire was recognized with the British Empire's highest military decoration.
