Pierre Oliva Cloutier 1906–1989

Pierre Oliva Cloutier of Saint-Hubert, Quebec, answered Canada’s call during the Second World War, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC). Enlisting in the Canadian Army, he was assigned service number D132394 and deployed to the Mediterranean Theatre during the Italian Campaign in 1944.

The RCASC formed the logistical backbone of the Canadian Army. Its soldiers delivered ammunition, fuel, food, equipment, and reinforcements to troops fighting at the front, often under enemy fire. During his wartime service, Cloutier performed duties as both a gunner and a cook, demonstrating the versatility expected of soldiers serving in operational units. Whether helping defend his convoy or ensuring his comrades were fed, every task contributed directly to the success of Canada’s fighting forces.

Following the campaign in Italy, Cloutier continued with the advancing Allied armies through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, before eventually serving in England as the war drew to a close. He remained overseas until 1946, assisting with the enormous task of occupation, repatriation, and the return of Canadian forces after victory in Europe.

His framed medals reflect a distinguished period of overseas service and include the campaign awards earned by thousands of Canadians who helped liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Though RCASC soldiers rarely sought the spotlight, their ability to keep armies supplied and moving was indispensable to every Allied victory.

Pierre Oliva Cloutier returned home to Quebec after the war, carrying with him the quiet pride shared by so many of Canada’s citizen soldiers. His service remains a lasting reminder that victory depended not only on those at the front, but also on the men and women whose dedication, endurance, and professionalism sustained the advance across Europe.
