First Sergeant, U.S. Army
First Sergeant Richard Barrett was an Irish-born American soldier in the United States Army who served with the 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. He is best remembered for his conspicuous gallantry in action during the Apache Wars in Arizona Territory.
On May 23, 1872, during an engagement at Sycamore Canyon, Barrett voluntarily led a charge against a group of hostile Tonto Apaches. His decisive action and bravery under fire resulted in his recommendation for the nation's highest military decoration for valor.
For his gallantry in action during this engagement, First Sergeant Barrett was awarded the Medal of Honor. He remains recognized as one of the key figures of the Indian Wars campaigns of the southwestern United States.
