Private, U.S. Army
Richard Moses Longfellow was a United States Army Private who served during the Philippine-American War. He earned the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his distinguished bravery in action on May 16, 1899, at San Isidro, Luzon, Philippine Islands.
During this engagement, Private Longfellow was serving as a member of the elite unit known as Young's Scouts. This group of selected soldiers performed high-risk reconnaissance and skirmishing duties, often operating far ahead of the main American lines during the campaign.
His courageous conduct during the conflict exemplified the highest traditions of the United States Army. His legacy remains preserved as one of the few select servicemen of the era to be recognized with the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry under fire.
