Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army
Robert Charles Murray was a United States Army soldier who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War. Serving as a squad leader in Company B, Murray sacrificed his life to save his fellow soldiers during a search operation.
On December 14, 1970, Staff Sergeant Murray's squad was actively searching for an enemy mortar position in the Republic of Vietnam when a squad member accidentally tripped a booby-trapped enemy grenade. Upon hearing the warning to take cover, Murray immediately recognized the imminent danger to his squad.
Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Murray threw himself directly onto the grenade, absorbing the full force of the explosion. His selfless and gallant action prevented death or injury to the other members of his squad, representing the highest traditions of the United States Army.
