Major Robert Henry Cain VC TD was a highly decorated British Army officer of the Second World War. He is best known for his actions during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, where his outstanding gallantry and leadership earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valor in the face of the enemy in the British and Commonwealth forces.
Serving with the South Staffordshire Regiment, Cain was part of the 1st Airborne Division's airborne assault. During the intense fighting, he personally led attacks against enemy armor and infantry, demonstrating complete disregard for his own safety. Despite being wounded and temporarily blinded, he continued to lead his men and personally destroyed multiple enemy tanks and self-propelled guns.
His exceptional leadership and courage under fire during the battle became legendary. Following the war, he was widely celebrated as a hero of the Arnhem campaign. He returned to civilian life but remained an iconic figure in British military history, remembered for his extraordinary fortitude and devotion to duty.
