Major General, U.S. Army
Robert Lee Howze was a highly decorated United States Army Major General whose military career spanned several decades of significant conflict, beginning with the American Indian Wars. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions as a Second Lieutenant with the 6th U.S. Cavalry during an engagement at White River, South Dakota, in January 1891.
During World War I, Howze served with distinction as the Commander of the 3d Division. He led his division during its march to the Rhine and during the subsequent occupation of enemy territory. His leadership and ability to maintain a high standard of efficiency in his unit earned him the Army Distinguished Service Medal, as well as prestigious foreign decorations from France.
Throughout his long career in the U.S. Army, Major General Howze commanded various units and served in multiple campaigns, including operations in Cuba, the Philippines, and along the Mexican border, establishing a legacy as an energetic and capable commander.
