Tore the 44th Tennessee's flag from the Petersburg lines!
Private Robert Alexander Reid captured a Confederate battle flag during the opening fighting around Petersburg. Born at Raploch, Scotland, on 22 January 1842, he served in Company G, 48th Pennsylvania Infantry and later reached the rank of ordnance sergeant.
On 17 June 1864 at Petersburg, Reid captured the flag of the 44th Tennessee Infantry. The official citation says little more, but the seizure of a regimental color required a soldier to reach the most fiercely defended point of an enemy formation.
