Took charge of two artillery batteries under heavy assault.
Rufus King Jr. faced a command crisis at White Oak Swamp Bridge and answered it by taking charge of two batteries under pressure. A first lieutenant of the 4th U.S. Artillery during the Seven Days Battles, King assumed command after his captain was wounded on 30 June 1862.
With a superior Confederate force pressing the position, King directed the batteries and continued the fight until the tactical situation forced a withdrawal. His leadership under fire was later recognized with the Medal of Honor.
