Sam Browne

General Sir Samuel James Browne was a highly distinguished British Indian Army cavalry officer. He is most widely recognized globally as the creator of the "Sam Browne belt," a piece of military equipment designed to assist carrying his sword after losing his left arm.

Browne served with great distinction in India, participating in numerous campaigns and actions. His exceptional bravery under fire earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

His long and meritorious career in the Indian Army culminated in his promotion to the rank of General. He was also appointed to several prestigious British orders of chivalry, cementing his legacy as one of the nineteenth century's most prominent colonial military figures.
