Biography

He earned recognition for gallantry at Muddy Creek, Montana.

Samuel D. Phillips earned the Medal of Honor at Muddy Creek, Montana, on May 7, 1877. A private in Company H, 2nd U.S. Cavalry, he served in the Army during the Indian Campaigns. The official citation recognizes gallantry but provides no further account of his individual actions.

Born in Butler County, Ohio, on January 28, 1845, Phillips was accredited to St. Louis, Missouri. His Medal of Honor was presented on August 8, 1877.

Phillips died on November 12, 1915, and is buried at Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota.
