Major, British Army
Major Samuel Hill Lawrence VC was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in Cork, Lawrence served as an officer in the British Army, eventually reaching the rank of Major.
During his distinguished military career, Lawrence served with the 32nd Regiment of Foot (later part of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry). His exceptional acts of bravery on the battlefield earned him the nation's premier decoration for valor.
Today, his Victoria Cross is preserved and displayed for the public at the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Museum in Bodmin, Cornwall. The museum also houses and displays his campaign medals and miniatures, which were generously donated by descendants of his sister's family.
