Admiral of the Fleet, Royal Navy
Admiral of the Fleet Sir Arthur Knyvet Wilson, 3rd Baronet, was a distinguished Royal Navy officer whose career spanned several major late 19th and early 20th-century conflicts. He served in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Mahdist War, demonstrating exceptional bravery under fire during the Battle of El Teb, where his actions earned him the Victoria Cross, the United Kingdom's highest military decoration for valor.
Wilson transitioned into significant command roles, commanding HMS Raleigh, the torpedo school HMS Vernon, and the battleship HMS Sans Pareil, eventually taking charge of the Experimental Torpedo Squadron and the Channel Fleet. He was known as an early proponent of submarine warfare and advocated for offensive schemes in the North Sea.
He served as First Sea Lord, succeeding Admiral Sir John Fisher. Although his tenure was brief and marked by controversy regarding his opposition to the establishment of a Naval Staff, he remained an influential figure and served as an advisor during the First World War.
