Biography
Snatched a rebel general's headquarters flag in Lee's retreat!
Smith Larimer captured a headquarters flag during the final pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia. A corporal in Company G, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, he fought at Deatonsville, Virginia, on 6 April 1865 during the series of actions around Sailor's Creek.
In the fighting, Larimer seized the flag associated with the headquarters of Confederate Major General Joseph B. Kershaw. Capturing an enemy headquarters color in close combat brought him the Medal of Honor.

Larimer was born in Richland County, Ohio, on 17 March 1829. He died on 20 February 1881 and was buried in Marlow Cemetery at Mansfield, Ohio.
