Stephen Welch was an American soldier who served during the American Civil War, achieving the rank of sergeant. He served with the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry, an infantry regiment that participated in numerous significant campaigns throughout the war.
On 8 May 1864, during the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge at Dug Gap, Georgia, Welch performed an act of extraordinary heroism. Under intense enemy fire, he risked his own life to rescue a wounded comrade who was trapped and vulnerable on the battlefield.
For his gallantry and selfless actions during the battle, Welch was awarded the Medal of Honor, which was officially presented to him on 13 April 1894. Born in Groton, New York, Welch survived the war and was later laid to rest at the Allegany Cemetery in Allegany, New York.
