Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army
Ted Takayuki Tanouye was a Japanese American soldier who served in the United States Army during World War II. Serving as a Technical Sergeant, he demonstrated extraordinary heroism and bravery on the battlefield, which ultimately led to him being posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor.
Throughout his service, Tanouye was also wounded in action, earning the Purple Heart with an additional award. His sacrifice and courage became a lasting source of pride for his hometown of Torrance, California, where his legacy has been extensively honored.
Following the war, Tanouye's memory has been preserved through several local dedications in Torrance. These include a permanent display at the Torrance Historical Society Museum established in 2002, the dedication of the local National Guard Armory in his honor, and a stone and bronze memorial located near his former high school.
