Unknown, British Army
Thomas Henry Kavanagh VC was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was employed as a member of the Bengal Civil Service in India during the Indian Mutiny. During the Siege of Lucknow, Kavanagh famously disguised himself as a sepoy and slipped out of the residency to guide a relief force under Sir Colin Campbell.
His daring exploit saved many lives and earned him the Victoria Cross, making him one of only five civilians ever to receive the medal.
