Captain of the Hold, U.S. Navy

Thomas Kane was a sailor in the United States Navy who served during the American Civil War. He held the rank of Captain of the Hold, a position responsible for maintaining the ship's storage areas and cargo.
During the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865, Kane distinguished himself through outstanding bravery and devotion to duty. This battle was a major amphibious assault by the Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps against the Confederate stronghold of Fort Fisher, which protected Wilmington, North Carolina.
For his heroic actions during the assault, Kane was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor. His legacy remains preserved as one of the key naval heroes of the Civil War campaign.
