Thomas William Hoffman was an American soldier who fought with the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving as a member of the 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. He attained the rank of brevet lieutenant colonel during his military service.
Hoffman was recognized with his nation's highest military honor, the U.S. Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Third Battle of Petersburg in Virginia on April 2, 1865. During the engagement, he demonstrated extraordinary heroism by preventing the retreat of a regiment.
