Private, U.S. Army
Private Thomas W. Stivers, also known as Thomas "Tom" Stevens or Stevers, was an American soldier in the United States Army who served with the 7th U.S. Cavalry during the late 19th century. He is best known for his actions during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877, a campaign marked by intense conflict on the American frontier.
During the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876, Stivers demonstrated exceptional bravery under fire. He was one of twenty-four men who volunteered to perform the highly hazardous task of carrying water from the Little Bighorn River to wounded soldiers positioned on Reno Hill, where troops were besieged by Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors.
For his gallantry during the battle, Stivers was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1878, though the decoration was ultimately received posthumously. He remains remembered alongside fellow Kentuckians and comrades for his selfless actions under extreme combat conditions.
