Timothy Spillane

Wounded twice, he stayed with his men and kept on fighting!!

Timothy Spillane was born in County Kerry, Ireland, in 1842 and served the Union Army as a private in Company C, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. His Medal of Honor action occurred in the hard fighting around Hatcher's Run in the final months of the war.

Between 5 and 7 February 1865, Spillane showed conspicuous courage in action. He was wounded twice but was reluctant to leave the field, remaining with his comrades despite his injuries. He later reached the rank of ordnance sergeant.

Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): During the fighting at Hatcher's Run, Spillane displayed gallantry and bravery in a charge and resisted leaving the field even after being wounded twice.

Spillane received the Medal of Honor on 16 September 1880. He died at Knoxville, Tennessee, on 3 December 1901 and was buried in Knoxville National Cemetery. His documented Civil War Army service clearly supports the Army Civil War Campaign Medal in addition to the Medal of Honor.
