Private, British Army
Tom Fletcher Mayson VC was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Serving as a lance sergeant in the British Army, he earned the distinction for his actions during the First World War.
His Victoria Cross was awarded for actions during the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, which was part of the larger Battle of Passchendaele. This battle is remembered as one of the most grueling campaigns of the Western Front, where his valor made a lasting mark on his regiment's history.
His Victoria Cross was later placed on loan to Whicham Church, from where it was subsequently given to the Kings Own Royal Regimental Museum in Lancaster, Lancashire, where it remains preserved as part of his legacy.
