First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Travis Earl Watkins was a United States Army soldier who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Korean War. Serving as a Master Sergeant, Watkins demonstrated conspicuous leadership and courage during the Battle of Yongsan, which ultimately cost him his life just two days short of his 30th birthday.
Prior to his service in the Korean War, Watkins was a veteran of World War II. His dedicated service and ultimate sacrifice are remembered through various memorials, and he was laid to rest at the Gladewater Memorial Cemetery in Gladewater, Texas. Since 2008, an annual memorial ceremony has been held at his grave on the Saturday closest to National Medal of Honor Day.
In recognition of his extraordinary heroism and legacy, the United States Navy named the transport ship USNS Watkins (T-AKR-315) in his honor, ensuring that his name and deeds continue to inspire future generations of service members.
