He saved a drowning shipmate while his ship was still at sea
Walter Elmore earned the Medal of Honor for rescuing a fellow sailor at sea on October 1, 1878. A Navy landsman aboard USS Gettysburg, he jumped overboard while the ship was underway off the coast of Algeria and saved Landsman Wallace Febrey from drowning.
Born in England in 1857, Elmore’s service was accredited to Toulon, France. His official citation records the rescue and the ship’s position at the time. His award preserves the recognition of a decisive lifesaving act during peacetime naval service.
