Corporal, British Army
William Anderson VC was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in Dallas, Scotland, he served as a Corporal in the British Army during the First World War.
He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. Because his parents had already passed away, the medal was presented to his brother, Alexander, during a ceremony at Edinburgh Castle in 1920.
Anderson's legacy is preserved at the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond, Yorkshire, where his Victoria Cross was later donated. He is also honored on local war memorials in Forres and Dallas, Scotland.
