Major, British Army
Major William Barnsley Allen was a highly decorated British Army medical officer who served with distinction during the First World War. His exceptional bravery in treating the wounded under heavy fire earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Throughout the war, Allen was decorated for gallantry on four separate occasions. In addition to the Victoria Cross, his recognized actions under fire earned him the Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross with a bar denoting a second award, and he was Mentioned in Despatches for his heroic conduct.
His service as a medical officer exemplified the highest standards of courage, providing critical care to fallen soldiers in the most hazardous battlefield conditions of the Western Front.
