Biography

He tried to rescue a shipmate who fell overboard from aloft.

William Corey received the Medal of Honor for attempting to save a shipmate aboard USS Plymouth on 26 July 1876. Serving as a Navy landsman at the New York Navy Yard, he responded after another crew member fell into the water from aloft. The award recognizes his courage in trying to preserve a fellow sailor’s life during a peacetime emergency. The brief citation does not specify the rescue method or its outcome.
