Biography

William D. Newland was a United States Navy sailor who served during the American Civil War. Serving as an Ordinary Seaman, he distinguished himself in combat, performing deeds of extreme gallantry and intrepidity.

For his exceptionally heroic actions during the conflict, Newland was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration presented by the United States government. His legacy remains preserved as one of the Navy's historical medal recipients of the 19th century.
