Lieutenant colonel, British Army
Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Dick-Cunyngham VC was a highly distinguished Scottish officer in the British Army who served during the late 19th century. He achieved his nation's highest recognition for bravery in the face of the enemy, the Victoria Cross, during his service with the Gordon Highlanders.
His military career was defined by his dedication and gallantry in active service, notably during conflict in South Africa. He was ultimately laid to rest in the Ladysmith Cemetery in South Africa following his service in the Boer War.
Today, his memory is preserved through multiple memorials in both South Africa and the United Kingdom, including a memorial in Cheltenham, England, and another alongside his siblings in Duddingston Kirkyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. His Victoria Cross is proudly displayed at the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen.
