Captain Brevet Major, U.S. Army

William Ernest Goodman was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Serving in the U.S. Army, he eventually achieved the rank of Captain and Brevet Major. His military career is defined by his actions during the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia, where he displayed immense courage under fire.
On March 3, 1863, Goodman rescued the colors of the 107th Ohio Infantry from Confederate States Army forces during a critical moment of the Battle of Chancellorsville. This act of bravery prevented the unit's flag from falling into enemy hands and served as an inspiration to his fellow soldiers.
For his gallantry in action, Goodman was awarded his country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor. He was officially honored with the decoration on January 11, 1894, decades after his wartime service concluded.
