Private, U.S. Army
Private William H. Strayer was an American soldier in the United States Army who served during the Indian Wars in the late 19th century. A member of the 3rd U.S. Cavalry, his service was defined by his duties on the American frontier, particularly during campaigns in Nebraska.
On April 26, 1872, Strayer was involved in a notable engagement against a Miniconjou Sioux raiding party at the Loupe Fork of the Platte River. Alongside three other men, including the legendary civilian scout William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Strayer demonstrated exceptional gallantry during the action.
For his courageous conduct during the engagement, Private Strayer was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. His actions alongside his fellow cavalrymen remain a documented part of the history of the Indian Wars on the Great Plains.
