Major, South African Forces
Major William Henry Hewitt was a South African soldier who served during the First World War. He became a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Hewitt's valorous actions during the war earned him a prominent place in South African military history. After his passing, his Victoria Cross was given to Framlingham College in Suffolk, England, by his wife, and is now on permanent loan to the Imperial War Museum in London.
