Lance Corporal, Canadian Expeditionary Force
William Henry Metcalf was an American citizen who chose to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I. His service with the Canadian Army on the Western Front would distinguish him as one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the conflict, earning renown for his immense courage under fire.
During his service, Metcalf was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He is one of only seven American citizens to have ever received this prestigious decoration, cementing his unique place in military history.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, Metcalf's bravery was recognized with the Military Medal and a Bar, indicating a second award of the same decoration. His actions during the war exemplified the profound contributions of American volunteers who fought under the Canadian flag before the United States officially entered the conflict.
