William L. Graul carried Pennsylvania's colors onto the Confederate works at Fort Harrison and was credited as the first man to plant his state's flag on the fortifications.
Graul was born on 27 July 1846 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He served as a corporal in Company I, 188th Pennsylvania Infantry. On 29 September 1864, during the assault on Fort Harrison, Virginia, he reached the works and planted the colors during the attack.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Fort Harrison, Graul was the first to plant the colors of his state on the enemy fortifications.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 6 April 1865. Graul died in Reading on 2 September 1909 and was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery.
