William Lord crossed a deadly space between the opposing lines at Drewry's Bluff to bring a helpless wounded officer to safety while both sides were firing.
Lord was born on 13 February 1841 in Bradford, England. During the Civil War he served as a musician in Company C, 40th Massachusetts Infantry. On 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, he went to the aid of a wounded officer lying between the lines and removed him from danger under fire from both Union and Confederate positions.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Drewry's Bluff, Lord went between the lines under fire from both sides and carried a helpless wounded officer to safety.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 4 April 1898. Lord died in New York City on 4 August 1915 and was buried in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, New York.
