William M. Carr remained at his duties aboard USS Richmond as Confederate fire raked the ship during the Battle of Mobile Bay, one of the war's most important naval engagements.
Carr was born on 25 November 1829 in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the U.S. Navy as master-at-arms aboard Richmond. On 5 August 1864, the ship fought Confederate forts and gunboats and the ironclad Tennessee. Despite damage and casualties aboard Richmond, Carr performed his duties with skill and courage throughout the prolonged action.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): Aboard USS Richmond at Mobile Bay, Carr performed his duties with skill and courage despite enemy fire, damage to the ship, and casualties among the crew.
Carr died at Newtown, Virginia, on 2 May 1884 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery at Norfolk, Virginia.
The source rack used the Army Civil War campaign entry. Because Carr's qualifying service was in the U.S. Navy, the proposed rack is the Medal of Honor and the existing Navy Civil War Campaign Medal. No ribbon device is supported.
