Sergeant, Canadian Army
William Merrifield VC, MM was an English-Canadian soldier who served during the First World War. Serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he distinguished himself as a highly decorated infantryman on the Western Front.
Merrifield was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for his actions during the Battle of the Canal du Nord on 1 October 1918. Earlier in the conflict, his bravery had also been recognized with the Military Medal.
His legacy remains an important part of Canadian military history, representing the extraordinary valor of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the intense fighting of the Hundred Days Offensive in the latter stages of the war.
