William Moore was wounded aboard USS Benton during the attack on Haines Bluff but continued carrying out his duties under heavy fire until the force withdrew.
Moore was born in Boston, Massachusetts, although authoritative historical sources disagree on the exact year. He served as a boatswain's mate aboard Benton. On 27 December 1862, during the gunboat's action against the Confederate defenses on the Yazoo River, Moore remained at his duties despite being wounded and despite the sustained fire directed at the ship.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): Wounded during the Haines Bluff action, Moore continued performing his duties aboard USS Benton under heavy enemy fire until the withdrawal.
Moore died at Austin, Texas, on 16 February 1918 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery there.
The source rack used the Army campaign entry. Because his qualifying service was in the U.S. Navy, his proposed rack is the Medal of Honor and the Navy Civil War Campaign Medal. No ribbon device is supported.
