Petty officer 2nd class, Royal Navy
William Nelson Edward Hall was a Canadian sailor who served in the British Royal Navy as well as the U.S. Navy. He is historic for being the first Black person, the first Nova Scotian, and the third Canadian to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
His most celebrated actions occurred during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, specifically at the critical Siege of Lucknow. Serving as a Quartermaster, Hall demonstrated immense bravery under intense enemy fire while operating a heavy 24-pounder gun alongside a fellow officer.
Hall's steadfast composure and relentless firing at the walls of the Shah Nujeef mosque, a key Sepoy stronghold, played a decisive role in breaching the defences. His actions were integral to breaking the siege and facilitating the subsequent British evacuation, cementing his place in military history.
