William Patrick Hogarty earned the Medal of Honor for gallantry in two of the Civil War's hardest-fought battles, and his service at Fredericksburg cost him his left arm.
Born on 16 February 1840 in New York City, Hogarty entered Union service with Company D, 23rd New York Infantry and later served as an officer. His Medal of Honor recognized conduct at Antietam, Maryland, on 17 September 1862 and at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on 13 December 1862. At Fredericksburg he was attached to Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery, where he was severely wounded.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): Hogarty displayed distinguished gallantry at Antietam and again at Fredericksburg, where he was severely wounded while serving with Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 22 June 1891. He later held the rank of second lieutenant and brevet captain. Hogarty died on 23 October 1914 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
His verified rack consists of the Medal of Honor and the Army Civil War Campaign Medal. No clasp, service star, or other ribbon device is supported.
