Sergeant, U.S. Army
William P. Thompson served as a sergeant in the United States Army during the American Civil War. He is remembered for his ultimate sacrifice and extraordinary bravery during one of the war's most brutal engagements.
During the Battle of the Wilderness, Sergeant Thompson performed the actions that would earn him the nation's highest military decoration. He was killed in action on May 6, 1864, during the height of the fierce fighting in the dense Virginia woods.
In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, the Medal of Honor was posthumously issued to him on December 1, 1864, preserving his legacy as a hero of the Union war effort.
