William P. Thompson's Medal of Honor action came in the tangled fighting of the Wilderness, where he captured an enemy regimental flag.
Born on 11 January 1844 in Brooklyn, New York, Thompson served as a sergeant in Company G, 20th Indiana Infantry. On 6 May 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, he seized the flag of the 55th Virginia Infantry.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At the Wilderness on 6 May 1864, Thompson captured the flag of the 55th Virginia Infantry.
His Medal of Honor was presented posthumously on 1 December 1864. Thompson died on 7 October 1864 and was buried in Greenbush Cemetery in Lafayette, Indiana.
