At Petersburg in the final days of the Civil War, William R. Fox helped capture an enemy artillery piece and seized a Confederate flag.
Born in Philadelphia in 1837, Fox served in the Union Army as a private in Company A, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry. During the assault on Petersburg on 2 April 1865, his conduct brought him into the center of the fighting as Union troops broke through the Confederate defenses.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Petersburg on 2 April 1865, Fox assisted in the capture of an enemy gun and captured a Confederate customhouse flag.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 28 March 1879. Fox died on 8 June 1888 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery.
