William S. Bond served aboard USS Kearsarge in the celebrated sea fight that ended the career of the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France.
Born in Boston in 1839, Bond served in the Union Navy as a boatswain's mate aboard Kearsarge. On 19 June 1864, the two ships fought off the French coast. Bond's conduct at his station during the engagement was recognized with the Medal of Honor.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): During Kearsarge's engagement with CSS Alabama off Cherbourg on 19 June 1864, Bond performed his duties with gallantry under enemy fire.
Bond died on 17 March 1892 and was buried in Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Vallejo, California.
His verified rack consists of the Medal of Honor and the Navy Civil War Campaign Medal. The generic Army Civil War Campaign Medal should be replaced by the service-specific Navy medal. No ribbon device is supported.
