At Missionary Ridge, William Schmidt went back into enemy fire to bring a wounded comrade to safety.
Born on 10 July 1846 in Tiffin, Ohio, Schmidt served as a private in Company G, 37th Ohio Infantry. On 25 November 1863, during the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, he exposed himself to intense fire to rescue a wounded fellow soldier.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Missionary Ridge on 25 November 1863, Schmidt rescued a wounded comrade under terrific enemy fire.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 9 November 1895. Schmidt died on 3 June 1905 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was buried in Lakewood Cemetery.
