Near Gravelly Run in the closing days of the war, William Sickles attacked a small group of Confederates, captured three of them, and freed a Union officer.
Born on 27 October 1844 in Danube, New York, Sickles served in the Union Army with Company B, 7th Wisconsin Infantry. His wartime service included the hard campaigns of the Iron Brigade, and his Medal of Honor action came at Gravelly Run, Virginia, on 31 March 1865.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): At Gravelly Run on 31 March 1865, Sickles captured three Confederate soldiers, dispersed others, and released a captured Union officer.
His Medal of Honor was presented on 28 February 1917. Sickles lived into his nineties and became the last surviving Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He died on 26 September 1938 in Orting, Washington, and was buried in the Soldiers Home Cemetery there.
