First Sergeant, U.S. Army
William Toomer was an American soldier who served in the United States Army during the American Civil War. He distinguished himself through exceptional bravery and gallantry during the Union Army's operations in the Vicksburg Campaign, a pivotal series of maneuvers and battles in the Western Theater.
On May 22, 1863, during the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Toomer performed the actions that would later earn him the nation's highest military decoration. Serving as a private, he participated in a costly and highly dangerous assault against the heavily fortified Confederate works.
For his conspicuous gallantry in action, Toomer was officially awarded the Medal of Honor on July 9, 1894. He eventually attained the rank of First Sergeant, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and courage under fire.
