The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem is a British royal order of chivalry established by Royal Charter in 1888. Descended from the medieval Knights Hospitaller, the order is dedicated to humanitarian service, healthcare, and charitable work through organizations such as St John Ambulance and the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

Prior to 1974, the two separate titles "Knight of Justice" and "Knight of Grace", and they had these meanings::

Knight of Justice means the hero got their title through family inheritance or an official grant. They usually have a family coat of arms and belong to an established tradition.

Knight of Grace, on the other hand, means the hero earned their title purely through their own actions. They became a knight because of bravery, good deeds, or selfless acts—not because of their family name or whether they had a coat of arms.

In short: "Justice" is about tradition and birth, while "Grace" is about personal merit.
