Born on 15 May 1841 in Stewart County, Tennessee, Absalom Jordan enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving as a Sergeant in Company E, 3rd Indiana Cavalry. Throughout the conflict, Union cavalry units carried out dangerous reconnaissance missions, raids, and direct engagements against Confederate forces, often operating deep behind enemy lines under extremely hazardous conditions.

Jordan's defining moment came on 5 July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, one of the most decisive engagements of the Civil War. Displaying exceptional courage under enemy fire, he captured a Confederate battle flag, an act of extraordinary gallantry that carried immense tactical and symbolic significance during the conflict. His fearless conduct earned him the Medal of Honor, with the award officially recognising his conspicuous bravery during one of the most important battles in American history.
